Dear Students,

It's hard to believe, but the end of the year is here.  8th Graders are marching on to high school and beginning new chapters of their lives.  Is it too early to think about next year?  Absolutely not!  Teachers at Mitchell have already begun planning for next year.  In fact, a couple weeks ago, the Middle School Team already began planning next year's class trip to Washington, D.C.

I encourage all students to be safe this summer and to continue reading, writing, and yes, maintaining math skills.  If you're wondering where to begin, look at the many links posted on the right hand side of this page.

Math games are a fun way to practice your skills.  Type "7th grade math games" in your Internet browser and you can explore a myriad of sites dedicated to students like you.  Many board and card games also require you to use math skills.  However, if someone asks you to play 52 Pick-up, kindly say, "No, thank you."

If you are short on cash or are saving for your Washington, D.C. trip, visit your local Chicago Public Library and check out a book for free!  Did you know that you can also check out music?  Do you want to read on your computer, iPad, Kindle, Sony Reader, iPhone, Android or other portable device?  Check out this website for free books: http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page.  You're welcome!

Do you journal?  Writing in a journal is a great way to document your experiences and to keep up your writing skills.  Many students return to school in the fall not having written anything by hand all summer.  Avoid the back to school hand cramps by writing a letter to a friend, sending a postcard from the places you visit, or writing a book (hey, it could happen).

Do you have some extra time on your hands?  Practice typing!  Very soon, students will be required to type essays for graduation.  Search for "online typing tutor" in your web browser.  How many words per minute can you type.  Should we have a Mitchell Typing Contest?

I hope to see every student return to Mitchell next year.  Please be safe over the summer and stay out of trouble.  If you are looking for something fun and free, check out sites like http://www.chicagokids.com/ for event details, many of which are often free.

Have a safe and fun-filled summer.  I cannot wait to see you in the fall.

Sincerely,
Mr. Wood
